Mary Poovey - A Literary Scholar Tackles Financial Modelling

Mary Poovey is a Cultural Historian and Director of the Institute for the History of the Production of Knowledge.She has written a series of books on the the epistemic consequences of the development of financial systems. in these works traced the epistemological function of finance from her first work 'A History of the Modern Fact: Problems of Knowledge in the Sciences of Wealth and Society' (1998) in which she outlines development of abstruct 'facts' through the development of financial systems in the 18th and 19th centuries, to her most recent work, 'Finance in America' (2017) in which she outlines the profound influence Finance and Accountancy have on epistemology today. She notes the pattern of ever greater abstraction towards theoretical truths and models. Poovey makes clear the epistemic consequences of these system's development has not been limited to the domain of finance but has permeated epistemology of a foundational level accross all spheres.
